Are you planning to visit San Diego, but don’t know which hotel is better to choose and book? In this article, we recommend high-grade hotels in the center of San Diego, on the beaches, and near the airport. We visited this interesting city, which is located almost on the border with Mexico. But we could not decide where it is better to stay for a few days so that it will be not very expensive and not far from the sights. We read many reviews of tourists, reviewed many accommodation options on, and collected a lot of useful information about the best-rated, high-priced and cheap hotels in San Diego, which we are happy to share with you.

Hotels in San Diego are very different, for every taste and budget. These are the most convenient places for tourists and travelers from all over the world, located in beautiful houses on the bay near the beach or in the city center near popular attractions, such as an excellent resort hotel near the SeaWorld – Paradise Point Resort & Spa or an inexpensive Staypineapple at Hotel Z in the historic GasLamp quarter.

Like Los Angeles hotels, in terms of comfort and price, San Diego hotels are divided into several categories: hostels, cheap motels, 3 * cheap hotels with breakfast and free parking for cars (like in San Francisco), unusual guesthouses and cozy B&B , comfortable 4 star rooms and suites and 5 star luxury suites with private beach and spa.

Choosing a convenient place to stay in San Diego turned out to be much easier for us than in experiencing problems with housing in New York or San Francisco. Several hundred good hotels are ready to receive guests and provide them with a high level of service, as we personally saw during our trip.

Important to know:

There are quite a few hotels and resorts in San Diego – almost like in the coast of Miami. Therefore, depending on a budget of the vacation or the purpose of the trip, each tourist can find a place for 1-2 days just to spend the night or a good hotel in which it will be nice to spend a week or more.

San Diego does not have as many cheap hotels as Las Vegas on weekdays, but the choice of affordable accommodation for budget travelers is quite wide.

The cost of rooms in San Diego compared with the prices of the best hotels in Bangkok is generally higher. But even a simple traveler can afford to stay for a few days in comfortable 4-star hotels.

We have compiled a list of the best-rated hotels in San Diego with their brief description and prices, so you don’t need to spend time searching for information on the Internet.

It includes the most famous and expensive hotels – Hotel del Coronado, InterContinental, and budget ones with good recommendations, located in the most convenient for tourists parts of the city – The Bristol Hotel, Good Nite Inn near SeaWorld.

Best places in San Diego to choose a hotel

How to choose a place to stay in San Diego? First, determine the area in which it will be convenient for you to live, and then book a hotel that suits you in terms of comfort and price.

Important to know

San Diego’s areas of interest are quite far from each other, but many city showplaces are concentrated in the city center. When choosing a hotel, you need to consider its location on the map, so that during a trip to San Diego you do not spend much time on the road, but rather see more and have more time to relax.

Our recommendations:

For a relaxing holiday and comfortable traveling the city, it is better to choose hotels in the historical center, although the prices there are quite high. It is most convenient to settle in one of the Downtown hotels between the GasLamp gas lantern district, where nightclubs are concentrated, and the Marina area, where the Maritime Museum is located, right in the port on the old Midway aircraft carrier. For example, in the good four-star Westin Hotel or you may rent upscale apartments in SpringHill Suites right next to the ship.

We also recommend hotels in the Broadway area and San Diego hotels on the beach. There you can rent a Quartet at affordable prices – a room for only $ 120 at The Sofia Hotel, not far from the Balboa Theater. There are many shops around and good restaurants with live music, as well as the Civic Center metro station nearby – ideal for tourists without a car.

You can also choose an excellent hotel in the city center – Horton Grand Hotel. It is also convenient primarily for those travelers who don’t have a car. Or choose a place closer to the waterfront along Harbor Drive. One of the most exciting is the Hard Rock Hotel.

Many cultural showplaces, such as the famous San Diego Zoo and the Aerospace Museum, are located in the Balboa Park area. Near the park (on its western side) there is a good hotel in a beautiful historical building – Inn at the Park, and in the southwest another quite inexpensive hotel – Downtown San Diego Lodge.

A little north of the city center, in the Little Italy area near Waterfront Park, there are several cheap hotels with good reviews, such as Urban Boutique Hotel. It is always a pleasure to walk through the old quarters, being away from the bustle of the central part of the city. Besides, it is quite easy to get from Little Italy to any part of San Diego.

If you rent a car or travel by car, you can settle on the island of Coronado, which connected to the shore by a sandy isthmus. There are the best restaurants, art galleries, and white sandy beaches, some of the best in the USA (cooler than in Miami and almost like in the Maldives). This is where the famous 5-star Del Coronado Beach Hotel is located.

Sleeping near the San Diego International Airport (SAN) is most convenient in one of the hotels with beautiful views of the bay – Sheraton Hotel & Marina or Hilton Airport / Harbor Island. We also recommend a budget hotel in the Mission Hills area with a good breakfast, pool, and convenient free shuttle service – Holiday Inn Express.

The old city is located between the I-5 and I-8; it is best suited for travelers with children. They often come here before or after Disneyland in Anaheim. In addition to exploring historic buildings and beautiful squares, as well as buying a variety of souvenirs, it is most convenient to go to SeaWorld from here, and the San Diego Zoo is not very far away. Here are the good hotels in the Old Town: Hilton Garden Inn, Cosmopolitan.

The Mission Valley area along I-8 has a large selection of budget hotels. There is nothing special to watch, but for budget travelers who have arrived in San Diego, this is the most suitable accommodation option. The best option for the price/quality ratio – La Quinta Inn & Suites.

Good to know: The southern suburbs of San Diego – National City, Chula Vista, and San Isidro – are not quite right places to stay due to their proximity to the border. Therefore, we do not recommend booking hotels in them, despite lower prices.

Interesting fact: The nearest hotel to the Mexican border is just 500 meters from the border crossing – Rodeway Inn San Ysidro. Room costs only 60 dollars. It is pretty decent, and the guest reviews are good. So those who are going by car from the US to Mexico can take a chance.
